There are going to be a lot of students so we're likely going to use a near room. We require about 25 students to have laptops as we don't have enough PCs in the rooms. Please bring them to the exam.

Please check your grades and, if anything missing, please do the following:

• if any missing/wrong grades for lecture tests, post a message on the respective thread on the discussions forum
• if any missing/wrong grades on lab activities, send a private e-mail to the lab teaching assistant
• if any missing grades for the assignments, post a message on the discussions forum

January 10, 2020: We remind you that the last CNS (Computer and Network Security, 1st year master) lecture (lecture 13) on Monday, January 13, 2020, 6pm, room PR002, will features two talks on applied security (industry and government):

• Radu Caragea, senior security researcher at Bitdefender: Browser Engine Exploitation vs. Classical Binary Exploitation

These are going to be two very interesting talks, we invite you all to take part in them.

January 6, 2020: We value your opinions and input on improving the Computer and Network Security class (CNS) and its components. Please take the time and fill the feedback form on curs.pub.ro. You have to be logged in and enrolled to the course.

The feedback form is anonymous and active from January 6, 2020 to January 17, 2020. We will only be able to see the results at the end of the exam session. The feedback form has become available from January 6, 2020. You will find the link to the feedback form on the main page of the curs.pub.ro instance for your master's program CNS class (either PDCS or SRIC). It's not in the meta-course for all students.

We kindly ask you to evaluate the activity of the CNS team and mention the strong and weak points and your suggestions for improvement. Your feedback will help us improve both the CNS class and other classes you will go through in the future.

We will provide our analysis of your feedback at the beginning of the next semester.

We are particularly interested in:

• What didn't you like and what you consider didn't go well?
• Why didn't you like that and why you consider it didn't go well?
• What should we do to make things likable and going well?

January 6, 2020: In today's lecture (Monday, January 6, 2020, 6pm, room PR002) we will present an exploit for a kernel vulnerability that does privilege escalation, allowing a non-privileged user to get root access: CVE-2017-5123

October 14, 2019: It seems that, up until now, the link to the CNS VMs hosted an older version of the Kali VM. We've updated it now and added some extra info. Please download the new version. Don't forget to check its hash.

October 9, 2019: CNS lecture test #1 will take place today, Monday, October 14, 2019, at 6:05pm, at the beginning of lecture 3, in room PR002. Please be there on time.

The first lecture test will cover topics from lecture 01: Introduction. Basic Exploration Tools and lecture 02: Program Analysis.

October 9, 2019: If you choose to, you can keep the lab grade (all labs) or the assignments grade (all assignments) from previous academic years or both. You cannot keep grades for lecture tests or for the exam. In case you want to keep grades, reply on the respective thread on acs.curs.pub.ro.

September 30, 2019: We would like to remind you that the first Computer Network Security lecture will take place today, September 30, at 18:00 in room PRECIS 002. The first Computer Network Security labs will immediately follow from 20:00 in rooms PRECIS 706, EG106 and EG306. The last instance of the first lab will take place next Monday, October 7 from 16:00 in room PRECIS 706.

September 29, 2019: The lab groups will be created after replying to the lab allocation threads on the General Discussions forum starting with Monday, September 30, 2019, 10:15 AM. There will be a thread for each lab slot where you will fill your name and master program until a limit of 16 students per lab slot. You can only fill your own name.

We will then fill the lab split here.

September 23, 2019: Welcome to the wonderful and challenging world of security. Put on your hackers hats, get your assembly skills on, start thinking in binary and let's get cracking! The Computer and Network Security class focuses on offensive security: i.e. reverse engineering, binary analysis, exploiting and runtime application security. We will not tackle crypto or web security as these are going to be better handled at other classes. Enjoy the ride!
